I suffer from terrible hayfever in the summer months and makeup is a recipe for disaster. My streaming, itchy eyes mean that eye makeup can be a struggle. A great concealer is needed to cover up my red nose.
After suffering with hayfever for over 15 years, I’ve (finally) worked out that I react strongly to grass pollen & rape seed oil. You can use a pollen calendar to work this out. My hayfever is particularly bad in May, June and July which always make revision and exams that little bit trickier.
My biggest piece of advice for fellow hayfever sufferers is: ‘DO NOT TOUCH YOUR EYES’. No matter how itchy your eyes feel, don’t do it! It’ll only make you feel worse and red, bloodshot eyes aren’t a great look.
Make Up:
For makeup, a good base is key so hopefully my skin looks healthy even if I don’t feel 100%. I’ll usually wear Rimmel’s Wake Me Up foundation because this is lovely and glowy, giving a medium coverage which I find works well for summer months. I’ll combine this with the Collection Lasting Perfection concealer- this is long-lasting and it’s perfect to brighten up those tired, itchy eyes and it’s great at reducing redness around that sore nose.
I try to avoid eye liner and heavy eye makeup during my hayfever period because of my streaming eyes so I like to go for a bright lipstick; MAC Flat Out Fabulous and Ruby Woo are two of my favourites as they detract attention from my blood-shot, watery eyes. I’ll finish with a add a coat of waterproof mascara (trust me, it’s necessary). On the bright side, my summer hayfever makeup routine is a lot quicker than my normal one!
I also use cooling eye masks from boots at the end of the day when I’ve taken my makeup off as by that point, my eyes are really itchy and need soothing.
